REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER LEVERAGES HEALTH SERVICE AND EDUCATION TO DRIVE REVENUE
MARKET OVERVIEW
Originating from a small, private hospital started in 1919 in South Carolina, this regional medical center has grown to a 286-bed, acute-care facility. Serving a six county area, this hospital has a multitude of specialties and programs that offer state-of-the-art health care. This regional medical center is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and offers a 24-hour emergency department, full range of high-quality medical services and a proactive, communitywide wellness program for the area it serves.
EXECUTION
In the execution of its employer development strategy, this medical center initiated relationships with area employers by providing health services and education on-site to employees. On average, the Employer Relations Director conducted five events per month for participating employers. Eight of these events were studied in an effort to track resulting encounters of participants at the facility. These events included three employer based colon cancer mini-fairs, two prostate screenings at a urologist’s office, two screening events at the wellness center and a women’s “Heart Health Day” at the hospital.
RESULTS
The list of event participants was cross-referenced with admissions records provided by the hospital. Any encounter by a participant that took place after the participant attended the event was tallied. From September 2005 through September 2006, attendees from these eight events contributed $972,975 in total charges resulting in $238,745 in total payments resulting in a healthier local workforce and more profitable operation.
